Aunty Anita Craig was born in Lismore and is a Bundjalung
woman. She came to Coffs Harbour when she was 5 years
old with her Uncle and Aunty, Percy and Lucy Harvey
in 1943. She lived on the old Camp which was located
where you now find The Fitzroy Hotel. Aunty Anita has
5 children, 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Aunty Anita has undertaken 2 separate lots of study,
firstly completing a Diploma in Aboriginal Health and
Community Development then a Diploma in Teaching.
Information recently obtained through researching her
family tree (genealogy) that Anita’s great grandfather
Bill William came from Bowraville, a great new surprise
to Anita and her family.
Aunty Anita’s interests are varied. Her interests
include her family, reading, community development and
walking.
Aunty Anita spent much of the start of her working
life doing seasonal work picking different vegetables.
However when her children were school aged she took
up a position with The Save The Children Fund, where
she worked for 10years.
She then went on to work for The Department of Health
as an Aboriginal Health Worker for 15 years. From 1983
– 2004 she worked as a volunteer with the Aboriginal
Land Council.
Aunty Anita is also a member of The Gumbular Jilipi
Elders Group and The Coffs Harbour Shire Council’s
Advisory Committee.
Aunty Anita’s association with the Coffs Harbour
Aboriginal Community Care Centre has been a lengthy
and varied association. Anita is currently a respected
member of the Board and is pivotal in maintaining a
balanced community focused organisation.
Anita was a key member in the establishment of the Wheels
to Meals Program currently being run within CHAFCCC. |
